Radiator balancing: how to do it and why it matters

If some rooms in your home feel like a sauna while others stay chilly, your radiators may be out of balance. Balancing them can make your heating more comfortable, more efficient and often cheaper to run.

What radiator balancing actually is

Radiator balancing is the process of adjusting the flow of hot water so each radiator in your home heats up at a similar rate. Instead of the nearest radiators taking most of the heat, you share it out fairly across the system.

This is done mainly using the lockshield valves on each radiator, with support from any thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) you have fitted. You are not changing boiler settings, just fine-tuning how quickly hot water passes through each radiator.

Common signs your radiators need balancing

You do not need specialist tools to spot an unbalanced system. Typical symptoms show up in everyday use and are often most noticeable when the heating first comes on.

  • Rooms near the boiler get hot quickly, while distant rooms stay cold

  • Radiators on one floor heat much faster than those on another

  • Some radiators are scorching at the inlet but lukewarm at the outlet once the system is running

  • Noisy pipework or rushing water sounds as hot water fights to get through

  • You constantly tweak the room thermostat yet some areas never feel right

If only one radiator refuses to heat, that is often a different issue. Balancing is aimed at systems where several radiators work, but at very different rates.

Safety-first preparation

Before you touch any valves, think safety. Make sure you can reach all radiators comfortably and avoid over-tightening anything. Metal parts can become very hot, so use a cloth or gloves if needed.

If you have a sealed system with a pressure gauge on the boiler, make a note of the cold pressure before you start. You should also know how to isolate the boiler and where your filling loop is, in case you need to top up afterwards.

Tools you will need

You do not need an engineer’s toolkit to balance radiators, but a few basic items help a lot:

  • Radiator bleed key

  • Small adjustable spanner or lockshield valve key

  • Flat-head screwdriver (for some TRVs and lockshields)

  • Digital thermometer or infrared thermometer (optional but useful)

  • Old towel or cloth and a small container to catch drips

Step 1: Bleed radiators and set a baseline

Start with the system off and radiators cool. Bleed each radiator to remove trapped air, beginning with those upstairs and working down. Hold a cloth beneath the bleed valve, turn it slowly until air hisses, then close it as soon as a steady trickle of water appears.

Once bled, open all TRVs fully and open all lockshield valves by turning them anticlockwise to the stop. This gives you a neutral starting point so every radiator is getting maximum flow before you begin balancing.

Step 2: Warm up the system

Turn the heating on and set your room thermostat higher than usual so the boiler runs continuously for a while. Turn off the hot water heating if you can, so the boiler is focusing only on the radiators.

Leave the system running for at least 15 to 20 minutes. During this time, avoid adjusting room thermostats or TRVs. You want to see how the system behaves with everything wide open.

Step 3: Identify fastest and slowest radiators

Carefully feel the flow pipe on each radiator (usually the one with the TRV). The radiators closest to the boiler and pump generally heat up first, while those furthest away or highest may heat up last.

Make a simple list, from the fastest-heating radiator to the slowest. This order will guide your adjustments so you gradually restrict flow to the quickest ones and encourage more flow to the slower ones.

Step 4: Adjust lockshield valves methodically

Start with the radiator that heated up first. Close its lockshield valve fully by turning it clockwise gently until it stops. Then open it a small amount, for example a quarter to half a turn. This restricts flow and pushes more hot water towards other radiators.

Move to the next radiator on your list and repeat, but perhaps open that lockshield slightly more. As you work your way to the slowest radiators, their lockshields will usually end up more open than those nearer the boiler.

Using a simple temperature drop target

If you have a thermometer, you can be more precise. Aim for a small but consistent temperature drop across each radiator, for example around 10 to 12 °C difference between the flow side and the return side when the system is up to temperature.

Measure the temperature at the inlet and outlet of a radiator. If the drop is too small, gently close the lockshield a touch. If the drop is very large or the outlet is much cooler, open the lockshield slightly. Make small changes and wait a few minutes between each tweak.

Step 5: Recheck, listen and stay safe

Once you have adjusted all lockshields, let the system run for another 20 to 30 minutes. Walk around the property and check that all rooms are heating more evenly and that radiators are warming from end to end.

Listen for unusual noises. If pipes begin banging or you hear loud rushing water, you may have restricted flow too much on some radiators. Reopen their lockshields a little and see if things settle.

Never force a stuck valve. If a lockshield or TRV will not move easily, stop. Forcing it can cause leaks or damage the valve spindle, which then needs professional replacement.

Special notes for sealed systems

On sealed systems, bleeding radiators can drop the pressure. Check the boiler gauge once everything has cooled down. Typically, cold pressure should sit around 1.0 to 1.5 bar, but follow your boiler manufacturer’s guidance.

If pressure has fallen significantly, you may need to top it up using the filling loop. Do this slowly and do not exceed the recommended cold pressure. If the pressure repeatedly drops, call a heating engineer to investigate rather than constantly adding water.

Balancing is a great DIY job if everything moves freely and there are no leaks. However, there are clear points where it is safer to bring in a professional.

Stop and call an engineer if valves are seized, if you notice any water leaking from radiators or pipe joints, or if boiler pressure behaves unpredictably. Also seek help if balancing improves things only slightly and some radiators still refuse to heat properly.
