Boiler Losing Pressure: Common Causes, Checks & When to Call an Engineer
If your sealed-system boiler keeps losing pressure, it is more than just an annoyance. Low pressure can leave you without heating or hot water, and repeated topping up can damage the boiler over time if the real cause is not fixed.
How boiler pressure should behave
On a typical domestic sealed system, the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler should sit around 1.0 to 1.5 bar when the system is cold. As the heating comes on and the water heats up, it will rise slightly, often to around 2.0 bar.
A slow, occasional top-up once or twice a year can be normal. If you are topping up monthly, weekly, or even daily, that points to a fault somewhere in the system that needs attention.
Quick checks before you call an engineer
You can safely gather some useful information before calling an engineer, without removing any covers or touching electrical parts. This can help narrow down the fault and speed up the repair.
Note the pressure when the system is cold and again after the heating has been on for at least 30 minutes.
Check for any obvious damp patches under radiators, valves and visible pipework.
Look outside for the copper discharge pipe and see if it is dripping when the boiler runs.
Think about how often you have had to repressurise the system recently.
Write these points down, along with the boiler make, model and any error codes on the display. This will be extremely useful later if you need a professional visit.
Common reasons a boiler keeps losing pressure
Most pressure loss issues in sealed systems fall into a handful of categories. Some can be solved quickly, while others require an experienced engineer with the right tools.
Small leaks on radiators, valves and pipework
Tiny leaks are one of the most common causes of a boiler losing pressure. They are often too small to create obvious puddles but will slowly drop the pressure over days or weeks.
Check around radiator valves, especially where they join the pipes, and look for signs such as green or white staining, slight rusting, or a tide mark on carpets or skirting boards. Do not forget to check any visible pipes in cupboards and under floors where access panels are fitted.
Pressure relief valve discharging through the copper pipe
The pressure relief valve, often called a PRV, is a safety device that protects your system from excess pressure. If it opens, it sends water out through a copper pipe to the outside of your property.
Stand outside and find this pipe. It will usually point towards the ground on an outside wall close to the boiler. Signs to look for include:
Dripping water when the heating is running
Staining or limescale on the wall or path below the pipe
A constant damp patch in that area, even in dry weather
If the PRV is discharging, it may be because the valve itself is faulty, debris has got into it, or the system pressure is spiking due to a related problem such as a failed expansion vessel.
Problems with the expansion vessel
The expansion vessel gives water in the system room to expand as it heats up. It contains a flexible membrane with air or nitrogen on one side and system water on the other.
If the vessel loses its air charge or the membrane fails, the boiler has no cushion for expansion. Typical symptoms include the pressure starting low when cold, then rising quickly as the heating comes on and sometimes reaching 3 bar or more, often followed by the PRV discharging.
This is not something you can fix yourself, as it involves checking and recharging the vessel with specialist equipment and sometimes replacing it entirely. An engineer will test the vessel pressure and condition before deciding the next step.
Recently bled radiators
If you have bled radiators to get rid of trapped air, it is normal for the system pressure to drop afterwards. When air escapes, it needs replacing with water by using the filling loop to repressurise.
Bleeding followed by one careful top-up is not a concern. However, if you find you need to keep bleeding the same radiators or topping up every few days, that suggests air is getting into the system or water is escaping somewhere.
Failing internal components
Some pressure loss issues come from within the boiler itself. These can include a leaking pump, faulty seals, cracked heat exchanger or other internal parts.
Because the case on a modern boiler forms part of the safety room seal, only a Gas Safe registered engineer is allowed to remove it. If your checks outside the case do not reveal anything obvious, assume the fault may be internal and arrange a professional inspection.
Safe checks: what you can and cannot do
You can safely monitor and record system behaviour without taking anything apart. Keep an eye on the pressure gauge across a few days and note:
How quickly the pressure drops when the boiler is off, how high it climbs when the heating is on, and how often you are needing to top up via the filling loop. This pattern helps an engineer distinguish between a leak, expansion vessel issue or PRV problem.
Key things you should not do
There are a few clear lines you should never cross when dealing with a boiler losing pressure. These are as much about safety as they are about preventing further damage.
Do not keep repressurising endlessly. If you are topping up more than every couple of months, something is wrong. Constantly adding fresh water increases corrosion and can shorten the life of the boiler and radiators.
Do not open the boiler case. The case is a safety cover, and taking it off is strictly for qualified Gas Safe engineers. Removing it yourself can be dangerous and may invalidate your warranty or insurance.
Stop immediately if you smell gas or see electrical issues. If you notice a gas smell, scorch marks, burning smells or signs of water near electrical parts, turn off the boiler at the controls, ventilate the area and seek professional help straight away.

Having clear details ready can help your heating engineer diagnose the fault more quickly and arrive with the right parts. Before you call, make a note of:
The boiler make and model (usually on the front panel or a sticker inside the flap), any fault or error codes showing on the display, the cold and hot pressure readings you have observed, and how often you have been topping up the system. Mention any signs you have spotted, such as a dripping outside pipe or damp near radiators.
